Mulcher teeth are the working edge of your forestry mulcher — the part that takes all the wear so your rotor and machine don't have to. Choosing the right tooth is about matching the tooth design to the material you process and the power of your carrier. Here's what to look for.

1. Match the tooth type to the job

The main tooth families used on forestry mulchers:

  • Bullet teeth — pointed, self-sharpening teeth for general mulching of brush, small trees and stumps. They wear evenly and are the most common choice for universal mulchers.
  • Flat blade teeth — wider cutting edge, good for fine finish and grass/brush work where you want a cleaner cut.
  • Shark-style teeth — aggressive cutting profile for heavier material and faster feed rates.
  • Hammer teeth — heavy forged heads for the toughest conditions, often paired with carbide inserts.
  • Knife-type teeth (C-type, planer knives) — blade inserts mounted on the rotor, used on drum mulchers and chippers for a shearing cut.

If you process mixed material (brush, small timber, stumps), a bullet or shark tooth is a safe all-rounder. If you need a fine finish, look at flat blades or knife inserts.

2. Check the carbide configuration

Most mulcher teeth carry tungsten carbide tips — the harder the material you grind, the more carbide you want:

  • Single carbide tip — standard duty, most economical.
  • Double / triple carbide tips — for abrasive conditions and longer service life between rotations.

Carbide grade and tip geometry affect both wear life and cutting aggression. If your material is sandy or abrasive, prioritize teeth with more carbide coverage.

3. Verify the mounting system

Tooth mounting varies by machine family — 1-bolt, 2-bolt, and wedge systems are common. Always confirm:

  • Bolt size and thread pitch (for example M16×2.0 or M20×1.5)
  • Whether the tooth needs a companion scraper or wear plate
  • Left/right pairing (some teeth are handed, e.g. BCS04/BCS05 pairs)

A wrong mounting spec means the tooth will not seat correctly — or worse, fail in service.

4. Match power and rotor type

Light machines (< 150 HP) run smaller, lighter teeth. Heavy carriers and drum mulchers need heavier forged teeth with larger carbide inserts. Tell your supplier the machine model and rotor type (drum vs. disc) — it changes the recommendation.

5. When in doubt, ask with a photo
